GOED Publishes 2026 Ingredient Market Report

Global Omega-3 Volume Grew 2.6% to 136,000 Metric Tons.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3s (GOED) has published the 2026 edition of its Ingredient Market Report, an annual comprehensive report that offers in-depth analysis of the raw materials segment of the EPA and DHA omega-3 supply chain.

The report covers all sources of EPA and/or DHA in six finished product applications: dietary supplements, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, pet nutrition, infant formula and clinical nutrition/medical foods. The 200+ page report includes data from 2024 and 2025, with forecasts through 2028, and provides color commentary on trends and developments that impacted market dynamics over the timeframe covered in the report.

New this year, GOED added a strategies section to help stakeholders better understand the competitive landscape.

For 2025, the total global volume of omega-3 ingredients reached 136,000 metric tons, a 2.6% increase over 2024, while the total value fell 4.3% to US $2.53 billion. GOED notes that this decline represents a price correction rather than a demand collapse; the industry experienced a temporary spike in refined oil prices due to the 2023–2024 El Niño, which limited the supply of Peruvian anchovy oil. Prices normalized by late 2024, and volumes are currently forecast to grow at an annual rate of 3-4% through 2028.

 Key takeaways include:

  • The US and Europe are still the largest markets, but China led growth. Its supplement market is expanding and getting more sophisticated, and pet nutrition demand is rising fast. Mexico, the Rest of Asia, and the Rest of the World are increasingly seen as growth opportunities.
  • While most applications grew in volume, two remained flat: infant formula and pharmaceuticals. Pharma was hit by Vascepa generics in the US, though approvals in Europe should restart growth. Infant formula is constrained by falling birth rates in its core Asian, European and US markets; future potential lies in Latin America and Africa.
  • Supply challenges and geopolitics are the main risks to the industry. The industry diversified oil sources somewhat after the last El Niño event but still depends on few origins. Middle East conflict and protectionist policies in different markets could disrupt trade and raise inflation, pressuring consumers to cut discretionary spending.

Due to GOED’s intimate knowledge of the category and its access to proprietary market data from member companies, the report is considered the most accurate and comprehensive report available on the global EPA and DHA industry. A sample of the report, as well as purchase information, is available on the GOED website.
